Is there such a thing as 'Inner Game'? What is it that actually keeps people on the right track? Is there something more to life than our daily routines, our family travails and so on that are responsible for leading us on a journey of self-discovery? Is there anything else besides what we are directly aware of, what we have learnt and what is going on in our heads and lives that can actually 'trigger' changes in our personality?

Is there such a thing as 'Inner Game'?

The term 'inner game' has been used since the 60s in London by people like David Grove and John Peel. It refers to the role that our internal dialogue plays in determining the course of life that we choose to follow. It has important implications for how we see ourselves and it also has implications for the people around us. The essence of the term is that there is something more going on than our visible exterior world, that makes us who we are.

The term was first used in the 60s and it is often described as our subconscious or inner being. It is our inner guide to how we live out our lives and it is also our unconscious view of what the world should be like. Most of us have an idea of what an inner life looks like but when it comes to actually living it is a different matter. Many people describe their inner worlds as a reflection of their outer world, a sort of dimly lit version of the world outside.

Aspects of the inner game include what I call 'action meditation'. This means that one starts by reflecting on what he or she wants from the future. It could be a new business, a new career, a change of marital status or any number of things. The focus is on setting goals that are challenging but not impossible. This is where it becomes essential to have a clear idea about what it is that you want. If you have these aims in mind, then you are less likely to get sidetracked and lose your way along the way to getting them.

Then comes the inner game's implementation. It involves a person's daily habits. If these are not in line with what is being described by the goal, then things can begin to get out of hand. When this happens it usually leads to the person's sense of dissatisfaction and depression.

Is there such a thing as 'Inner Game'?

Is there something beyond a person's potential? There most definitely is, but only if you know how to harness the power of your inner game. Successful people tend to be good at developing an inner game. They put effort into keeping it interesting and, although not overly controlled, it still allows them to enjoy a varied and complex way of living. Without having one, however, life would be quite monotonous and dull.
